MKNK Foundation Donates Wheelchair and Sewing Machine to a Single Mother with Disability

Gbondi Town, Bong County – March 28, 2025 – In a show of solidarity and support for vulnerable women in Liberia, the Martin K. N. Kollie Foundation (MKNK-F) has donated a brand-new wheelchair, sewing machine, and bags of rice to Ma Esther Peter, a disabled single mother of two residing in Gbondi Town.

Ma Esther, who lost both legs two decades ago in a tragic hit-and-run motor accident, has remained a symbol of strength and resilience in her community. Despite her disability and the demands of raising two children alone, she has continued to earn a living through gardening and tailoring.

Her story gained renewed attention after journalist J. Titus Yekeryan shared her plight on Facebook, highlighting the urgent need for a new wheelchair and sewing machine to replace her worn-out tools. The post, which called for just US$150 in donations, caught the attention of the MKNK Foundation.

Moved by her determination and self-reliance, the Foundation swiftly stepped in and donated a durable wheelchair valued at US$210, a brand-new sewing machine worth US$140, and five bags of rice (US$86.25) to sustain her family and support her small business.

“With this support, Ma Esther can now resume her tailoring and gardening activities and begin retailing rice in her community,” said the Foundation’s founder, exiled Liberian activist Martin K. N. Kollie. “We are not just giving items — we are restoring dignity, livelihood, and hope.”

In a brief emotional response, Ma Esther told journalist Yekeryan:
“I am happy more than anything else. I tell God thank you. I thank y’all for giving me this. Tell him thank you for me. I am grateful and happy.”

Gbondi Town and nearby villages rely on Ma Esther for essential services like tailoring and retail goods, making this intervention not only a boost to her life but also to her wider community.

The MKNK Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to uplifting marginalized Liberians, especially women and persons living with disabilities, through practical and heartfelt assistance.
